My controller of choice

I am using a modified Kramer Striker guitar, which was formerly bundled with the PS2 release of Guitar Hero III.

Mods

To improve the performance for Clone Hero, I inserted a Chinese knockoff Arduino Pro Micro board, soldered wires from all the buttons to the inputs of the Arduino to capture all the different user inputs, and then broadcast them over USB Serial as HID inputs.

For the neck, I desoldered the old pogo pin connector since it was making a poor electrical contact, and instead soldered a bunch of dupont jumpers to manually connect before you insert the neck. It's jank, but will work until I purchase a better connector for it.

Most importantly, I inserted hall effect sensors in the strummer assembly, and put magnets in the strummer and used machine learning to allow for the user to customize the rakestrum, with no penalty to consistency. You can read much more about that here
